Sherlock Holmes Stories

Do you like detective stories? If you answered 'yes' this is your book!

Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective of them all. He sits in his room, and smokes his pipe. He listens, and watches, and thinks. He listens to the steps coming up his stairs; he watches the door opening — and he knows what question the stranger will ask.

In these three of his best stories, Holmes has three visitors to the famous flat in Baker Street — visitors who bring their troubles to the only man in the world who can help them.

I hope you enjoy reading these stories!

Venezuela - Canada Football Match

PROUD = ORGULLO

I will give a toast to you!

I will give a toast to you!

No, no te daré ninguna tostada!

‘Let’s give a toast to Peter’ significa ‘Brindemos por Peter’

Let’s give a toast to the cook!

Aunque si puedes decir 'To your health'

Lo que puedes decir entonces es:

Cheers!

Bottoms up!

'If I won the lottery I would buy a new house'

Usamos el pasado simple para hablar de la condición 'If I won the lottery' y usamos would + verbo infinitivo para hablar de la consecuencia 'I would buy a new house'.

'If I were you, I would go on a diet'

Beyonce - If I Were A Boy
If I were a boy
Even just for a day
I’d roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys
And chase after girls
I’d kick it with who I wanted
And I’d never get confronted for it
Because they’d stick up for me

If I were a boy
I think that I’d understand
how it feels to love a girl
I swear I’d be a better man
I’d listen to her
cause I know how it hurts
when you loose the one you wanted
cause he’s taken you for granted
and everything you had got destroyed!
If I were a boy

I would turn off my phone
Tell everyone that its broken
so they think
that I was sleeping alone
I’d put myself first
and make the rules as I go
cause I know that she’ll be faithful
waiting for me to come home (to come home)

If I were a boy
I think that I could understand
how it feels to love a girl
I swear I’d be a better man
I’d listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
when you loose the one you wanted
cause he’s taken you for granted
and everything you had got destroyed!

It’s a little too late for you to come back
Say its just a mistake
Think I forgive you like that
If you thought I would wait for you
You thought wrong

But you're just a boy
You don’t understand (and you don’t understand)
How it feels to love a girl
Someday you’ll wish you were a better man
You don’t listen to her
You don’t care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
Cause you've taken her for granted
And everything that you had got destroyed
But you're just a boy.
..

Veamos... ¿cómo dirías 'tengo 30 años'?

... no, no es ' I have ....'

Debes decir 'I am thirty years old' ... y no intentes traducir esto de manera literal porque sonará muy feo =(

Ahora intenta traducir las siguientes expresiones:

1- 'Tengo frío'

2- 'Tengo hambre'

3- 'Tengo sed'

4- 'Tengo prisa'

5- 'Tengo razón'

6- 'Tengo calor'

7- 'Tengo miedo'

Si piensas que debes usar el verbo 'to be' para decirlas, estás en lo cierto!

Serían ...

1- I am cold

2- I am hungry

3-I am thirsty

4- I am in a hurry

5- I am right

6- I am hot

7- I am afraid

* Recuerda que si quieres expresar estas ideas hablando de la persona 'he', 'she', 'it' deberás cambiar 'am' por 'is' y con las personas 'you', 'we' y 'they' usas 'are'

It is in a hurry!!

I am sleepy! Good night!

Labor Day

This is to the bus driver who gets us to work on time. The health worker who saves lives and the man who makes paper clips. Here's to the card guards and the musicians who get us dancing and to the Lizzies, Janets and Thelmas who know how we like our tea. This is for the teachers who give children homework and hope. The sportspeople who don't take it personally when we scream at the tv. Here's to the men and women who keep our streets clean and to every person who keeps our country working.

Happy Labor Day!

Do you know why we celebrate May 1st?

The struggle to have eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest was the origin of International Workers' Day, which is also referred to as May Day or Labor Day. The celebration commemorates the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886, when Chicago police shoot workers who were striking to establish the eight hour day. Many workers died in the event.

Historically, the first congress of the Second International, which was an organization of socialist and labor parties formed in Paris on July 14, 1889, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. In 1891, the Second International recognized May Day as an annual event. In 1904, Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries were called on to demonstrate actively on May First to establish eight hours of work a day and to get workers rights. Unions of all countries were urged to go on strike on May 1, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers.

Most countries celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1st, except in the United States and Canada, where Labor Day is held in September. Millions of working people and their labour unions, all over the world, organize street demonstrations and street marches. Several countries celebrate the day with parades, shows and other patriotic and labour-oriented events. Governmenents are urged to readjust salaries and wages and to acknowledge workers rights to strike and hold unions.

CELEBRATING CANADIAN'S FIRST YEAR ON 19th APRIL.

On 19th April 2009 we celebrated Canadian's first year in Mérida. Many students came to the party and had lots of fun, playing games and taking part in several activities.

They also had the chance to meet some partners from other groups, which was a great opportunity to realize that all the people gathered there, regardless their age, occupation or sex, had a common goal: to learn a new language efficiently in a pleasant and interesting atmosphere. And that is also my goal, that every student not only learns English efficiently, but also enjoys the process of learning and sharing a good time with their partners.

One year has gone by, and many people have put their trust in Canadian, which has given me more and more energy to continue supporting every student in their path to success.
